What happened to the Aztecs after 1521?
Cortés returned to Tenochtitlán in May 1521, and the city surrendered after a three-month siege. The Aztec empire came to an end with this triumph. Cuauhtémoc, Cuitláhuac’s successor as emperor, was kidnapped and later killed, allowing Cortés to rule over a huge Mexican empire.
