Why is phonics important in the early years?

Children may “sound out” words using their phonics expertise. [Children] learn how sounds are represented alphabetically and how to recognise various letter sounds, symbols, characters, and signs. In the early years of schooling and beyond, phonics is critical for children to become excellent readers and spellers/writers.
